Fall Series 2026
This fall, our English congregations will go through a 9-week series through the book of Philippians! We'll read through Apostle Paul's letter to the Church in Philippi as he encourages them to find joy in the journey.
In addition to our Sunday mornings, we have four people who are writing up weekly small group questions based on the same Sunday text. Often we may think: "I don't know what to study" or “I don’t know how to talk about scripture.” Don’t let that stop you from connecting with others at Butler Church – this is a simple way to be connecting and growing in our faith this fall!

Series Discussion Questions
As Anabaptists, we believe in community hermeneutics, meaning: we believe we can best hear the Spirit speaking through the text as we listen to a variety of voices and perspectives. So, this fall we’ll not only hear a weekly sermon, but we'll also have questions from a variety of people! These questions will be our bulletin each week, and uploaded to our series webpage, to reflect and encourage you through this series. These questions can be used individually, as a couple, as a family, or you can even meet up with a friend or start a small group during this 8-week series!
Week 2: September 13
We have heard a couple stories that take place in prison— Joseph last month and Paul this month. In both stories, both prisoners use the time to serve God by serving others. In this week’s reading, Paul celebrates the good that has come from his unfair imprisonment, but what happens when we cannot see the good just yet?
Read Philippians 1:12-20
1. Think about a time that you were placed in an unfair situation. How did it make you feel about others, about yourself, and about God?
2. Are there “prisons” within your own life that you cannot see God’s presence in?
3. At first glance, we may not think that a prison is a place where God is at work. Where are the uncommon places that you can see God working in?
4. Who are the people in your community that you can call on during painful times in life? What are their names?
5. Looking back at question 1, were there glimmers of hope that you can see now that you are no longer in the situation?
Dear Lord, Being in spaces that feel like prisons can make it difficult to see You at work. Sometimes it is hard to feel Holy Spirit’s presence despite what we know about You already. Help us to see glimmers of Hope when we are in the middle of our prisons and trials. May I learn to wait in faithful anticipation of your deliverance and rejoice like Paul did as he remembered Holy Spirit was near to him and that he had friends who cared deeply and prayed for him. Amen.
Week 1: September 6
Read Philippians 1:1-2
Questions: List the three groups of people that the apostle Paul addresses in Philippi. Who are these people? Who are they in our church?
Read Philippians 1:3
Questions: Paul opens every one of his letters by speaking grace and peace to his audience. These are “power words.”
What is the power that is being imparted to them as he speaks these two words? What is the difference between grace and peace?
Read Philippians 1:4-6
Questions: In verse six, what is the day of Christ Jesus? If God continues to perfect the good work He began in us until the day of Christ, does this mean that He will continue this project in us even after we die physically?
Read Philippians 1:7-11
Questions: In verses 9-11, Paul prays for the church. What are some of the elements of the “good work” that he expects to see in their lives? What good work is evident among us at Butler Church? How are you a co-laborer (a participant) in that Work?
